Prospect Drive 2

Share with your friends!

The was the final prospect drive of Ab Initio Gen 12.
Most of the Fellas returned from last week and a few from Gen 11 to continue the learning. Group was split up again into 2 convoys, 1 with some experience from other clubs and 2nd fairly new to the sand.

Convoy 1
Lead: Marko/Preggy
2nd lead: Rathica
Johann, Laco, Victor, Fouad, Afridi
Sweeper: Preggy/ Marko

Marko commenced the drive with a straight cresting refresher. Despite the perceived simplicity of this maneuver it soon became apparent that the refresher was necessary. After a few second tries and guided self recoveries the convoy was ready to move onto the the next important lesson of the day which was side sloping. The convoy handled this lesson extremely well and was able to put this newly learnt skill into practice with some fairly high speed side sloping along medium sized dunes.
During the second half of the drive, Preggy was asked to lead the convoy on a drive that was a good mix of medium speed side sloping, straight cresting in a technical area and safari style driving.
The convoy exited the desert in high spirits and are sure to have pleasant dreams about their first full length drive with Desert Fellas.

Convoy 2
Lead :ChefMarc
2nd Lead: Gianluca
Ahmed, Lucas, Darion, Lucy, Martin
Sweeper: Sujith

Convoy warmed up with some striaght cresting and it was not long for a few second tries and stuck, once conficance was back up in this manoeuvre we did a lesson on side sloping and approch. Convoy managed well and level increased until all were displying solid technique before continuing. Mid part of the trip became quite technical with a few scond tries and stucks, a great opportunity to practice radio comunication. The end part of the trip was spent on higher dunes and convoy was flowing very nicley before heading to the exit.

This completed the Ab Iniotio 12 shedule and all prospected did amazing. We look forward to welcoming them into the Jr season once all required  saftey gear has been checked.

Big thank you to Marko and all the suporing team.

What an amazing drive ! I really appreciated the way Marko gave us his feedback when mistakes were done, Preggy for his great opening and his role as a sweeper “dont worry, if anything happens, I am there” and the last but nonetheless : Rathika for pushing us to keep up the rythm in the convoy and her great communication skills.

Shout out to Johann for quick tyre service, Marko for the vids and Laco for the gps track and the vid 😉

Looking forward to the next one.

Once again, trip was very well organised and disciplined throughout.

A briefing, with detailed plan for the morning drive was given, using “push-pull technique” to consolidate the 8 basic rules of driving in the desert, very good recap from previous drive.

Clearly, all the DF Team was paying attention how you were driving, mistakes were promptly identified, and proper technique explained over the radio. From a trainee perspective, this helps raising the confidence knowing that an expert has an eye on you!

The trip was magnificent! it is an absolute honour to drive with you!

Thank you very much for donating your time to teach us. Looking forward to the next drive!

  5. So woke up super early on Friday exited for the drive. I was expecting to be the first to arrive at the meeting point only to find Marc there brewing coffee.

Really enjoyed the drive, especially the higher speed maneuvers as the flow of the convoy was so good.

What I’m taking away from the drive:

    1. When straight cresting, use acceleration up the dune, momentum to carry you over the crest and inertia down.
    2. Throttle control technique thought by Marco when making a tighter turn to help with under and over steer, tap-tap the throttle at high revs to achieve control.
    3. You need speed when side-sloping or you will loose the backside of you truck to gravity putting you in a dangerous angle.
    4. Following distance. Obviously do not get to close to the car in front BUT also very important not to fall behind. With higher speed maneuvers is very difficult to catch up to the car in front if you fall behind. You have to push very hard to catch up and that can get dangerous and puts unnecessary strain on your car.

I learned a lot more, but these stuck out to me on the day.

Thanks again for the great drive, I look froward to seeing you all very soon!!

  6. well done to all the prospects
