Long road

The Long Road endurance drive attracted a small group of seasoned Offroaders.

Itโ€™s a pity that the drive was not attended by more of our recently graduated Offroaders, since it was a great opportunity to build staminaย  for those long drives in the winter months, further afield from Dubai. What the drive lacked in difficulty it certainly made up for in sheer distance.

We warmed up on the dunes near the town of Nahil and proceeded to drive in a south westerly direction towards Sweihan. Almost all of the dunes that we encountered in the first segment of the drive were covered by a fresh layer of sand that made it appear to be untouched, at least for the past few days. This freshly deposited sand was deceptively soft and created sharp ridges that were challenging to crest or switch across.ย  As a result, dune crossings were limited to the low points between successive dunes or via small bowls, which were used to catapult the convoy from one side of a large dune to another. The high slopes in this area were conducive to side sloping and high climbs, which the convoy thoroughly enjoyed.

The only rescue of the day occurred when our lead bellied out on an extremely high and pointed crest which formed the wall of a large bowl. Thanks to our sweeperโ€™s well honed rescue skills, a swift recovery was executed and the convoy was promptly back on track.

Shortly afterwards,, the convoy got onto a gatch road which led us to the spot where we would gather for brunch, under the shade of a ghaf tree. With our hunger satisfied, muscles relaxed and carโ€™s cooled, we were ready to take on some big dunes. Despite the dunes in this area also having pointed ridges, switching and cresting was possible, with some caution, and a proper angle of approach.

The convoy increased pace, and for the next hour an a half, was caught up in a trance of adrenaline filled dune bashing. The experience and skill of the group meant that a smooth flow was maintained even when the level of the challenges increased. This provided an opportunity to cover more ground in short period, and explore a larger section of this area. Unfortunately, there wasnโ€™t much time to really take in the scenery, since all focus was on staying on track.

We exited the desert after covering nearly 120 kilometers of sand driving. Mission accomplished.

Thanks Zoubeir, Hussam, Victor and Johann (sweeper) for participating in this grueling drive.

It’s good to be back in the Al Ain deserts which made me long even more for drives in that area and other different areas of Al Ain and Abu Dhabi.

The whole drive was smoother than a river, I would imagine Marko saying “this is what we’re looking for” at the end of the trip, so proud of the team work.

So grateful for the company and camaraderie of all of you gentlemen, I guess the brilliant FALAFEL and shawarma should have been highlighted in the trip report ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‚ thanks Preggy, Zoubier, Johann and Victor ๐Ÿ™

    1. We could do a Falafel Run drive once a month. After the desert drive we can all drive to a pre-selected Falafel join๐Ÿ˜‹

  2. After a extended time of the sand it was immensely enjoyable to be back in the familiar embrace of a Desert Fellas convoy. Seeing old friends as the sun emerged from the sands of the Arabian desert warmed my heart more than the midday sun.

The set structure of discipline in DF made it easy to find my rhythm again and I could enjoy the lines made by our leader. This small taste of desert driving has done nothing more than remind me how much I love and miss doing this hobby regularly.

Thanks to Preggy, Victor, Hussam and Zoubier for making this a special day.

A good re-introduction for the long drives before the winter !
In this magnificient part of the Abu Dhabi desert, company was awesome, the lead was top notch with amazing lines and safety at its best.

    Let’s do it again? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. As Hussam mentioned, the unsung hero of this drive was indeed the FALAFEL!
I hope we will have some drives soon, which will end with a nice snack/meal at a joint. Name suggestions: The Shwarma Run, Return of the Flafel, The Mandi Crests, Bowls of Koshari! hahah!

It a long drive, but the satisfaction of completing 120km, in an unfamiliar desert, was priceless. With winter months lurking, it is a good reminder to get out and explore the pristine areas of Abu Dhabi – which we sometimes tend to overlook against the usual SHJ/ Dubai deserts.

Can’t wait for the next one and thank you everyone for the great company, safety and trip discipline.
