The outer rims

It was a small convoy this morning with only two cars, but this setup has a special bit of joy as it means further, higher and faster. As intended, we made 75km offroader style and the drive felt like a 2 for 1 as we nearly made twice the normal distance.

But now from the beginning. Our plan was to start from Bayader, pass by gravity bowl on our way to Iftar and Super bowl, and then venture further out in the direction towards Madam. Despite having a crowded starting place in Bayader, we made it ahead of most convoys to venture into mostly untouched dunes. Warmup was a short bit of racetrack at high speed to give us more headway, then straight into cresting smaller dunes.

Before Gravity Bowl, we found endless crests waiting only for us, so we made use of the situation as this place is usually as packed as the Dubai Mall parking on a Saturday afternoon. Shortly after, we made our way from here towards Iftar bowl when we found a strange situation. A number of groups were all trying to drive over one dune, but directly behind it were better ones with higher and longer lines to drive on. We left the crows behind us and enjoyed these untouched dunes. This was the moment I wished I had a GoPro with me to record the drive in this area, as the landscape was breathtaking.

From here we made our way quickly towards Iftar and Superbowl, where we met with Chef Marc and his convoy. A short break with some banter, and we parted ways, with us heading towards the outer marker for the trip. Matt and I agree that this part behind superbowl towards Madam was the highlight of the trip. Very high dunes with steep crests required speed and skill to climb on top of them and then skill to stay on top. Those dune…. We approached them from many different angles and enjoyed the very long lines on top of them. We explored the area for 20 minutes, going further as initially planned.

After 2 hours and 15 minutes of driving, we decided to head back in the same style as we arrived, on top of the dunes. Skilled and fast is the best way to describe the return from Madam to Bayader shops as this track only took 1 hour, while having found a number of places to explore along the way.

What can I say, while bigger groups are fun, small convoys have the special charm of allowing to cover more distance and move faster.

Thanks Matt for the great drive and lets do this route again.
