Sulphur Ponds Hiking
Big day today with the first official Desert Fellas Hike
A strong group of 13 hikers arrived to the meeting point in Al Dahir region – club members with families, significant others and friends. After some final preparation and briefing we started vigorously the Sulphur Pond loop.
The weather could not be better, as recent rains made the air crisp, colors sharp and temperature ideal for hiking. However, the rains made also water levels in the valley and wadi much higher, a bit more what was expected, converting an easy family hike into a more demanding venture.
The group demonstrated nevertheless a great courage, strong fitness and teaming with mutual support in more demanding parts of the hike. We reached quickly to the sulphur ponds and enjoyed an epic climate of the place with unforgettable surroundings. As we progressed beyond the ponds, we reached a narrow part of the wadi where water levels were still quite high. The spirit was so high that after some initial hesitation and probing, we carried on, some hikers just giving up dry shoes and wading through knee-deep water.
Eventually though, ironic it may sound, as Desert Fellas we had to admit that water had higher grounds today. It was not a lack of fighting spirit – just the pace was slower than planned due to much more demanding terrain, hence making a full loop within acceptable time limits impossible.
But some of us decided to press on – Dora and Nathalie decided to take the challenge. After sharing required topography details and a radio for back-up comms, they successfully completed the full 8 km loop. Well done.
The main group went back the original route, making eventually over 4 km of out-and-back hike. What was really fantastic, is how we all become a well functioning hiking group, building confidence with the terrain and obstacles, providing seamlessly “a hand” when required and having an excellent time together.
Thanks to all for making this happen today – a next hike seems a must and rather soon!
