Into the wild
It was a long time since I went to Nahil, so as the title suggests, it was an exploration trip. We met close to Nahil shortly after sunrise with only 10 degrees outside. Banther was short as we wanted to get back into the warm cars and start to drive.
From the deflation point, we had two good options, left or right, with high dunes on either side.
We decided to go right and found that big sandy mountains awaited us to warm up. Big side slopes and some careful early crests were part of the routing to get us going. We found some interesting formations and followed them to make a long circle backward close to the starting point. Once the sun was up, we made a short break in the warming sun.
Haroon was our sweeper trainee who got to use his newly learned skills on a rope pull, helping me off a crest I got myself stuck on. Regardless of the level, it’s a stark reminder to always have someone with you when going into the desert.
Once the stuck was cleared, we stayed in the area to enjoy the sights, mountains, and crests.
As 8:45 approached, we decided to make our way to Nagrah, the biggest dune in the area. To make things quicker, we took the shortcut along the gravel road first and then a high speed sand road. Once we got close enough, we hit the dunes again doing great speed.
Nagrah itself was a bumpy joy. We took a couple of runs from each side, doing crests and the big side slopes, including a short break for a photo.
On the way towards the inflation point, we found many crests that were untouched, so we seized the opportunity and enjoyed cresting and switches towards Sweihan.
Short before heading out and as finish time approached, we spotted one dune and couldn’t resist, so we added 20 min to the drive and have the last big dune before calling a day.
Thanks to Jassim and Haroon for the ride.
