Discovery – 7 October
Discoverers joined us for what would be a fantastic day on the sand. It was amazing to see such a big turnout along with a diverse range of different cars, and for most of the group, driving in the desert for the first time.
Winter apparently didn’t get the memo that it was supposed to have started by now, but we persevered through the high humidity and temperatures once the sun had risen above the horizon.
There was a buzz in the air throughout the morning’s lesson with all participants having a positive attitude and eager to soak up the information, with many questions and discussions.
Not before long, we were in the cars with 4H engaged, AC turned up to the max, and ready to conquer the challenges Marko set which the whole group made look easy, crossing their first dune like pros and pretty soon the convoy was flowing as one.
A few rope recoveries for some of the heavier, longer wheel based cars were swiftly handled by Sven, signalling the end of the morning session.
Returning to the desert after a well-earned lunch break, we were joined in the afternoon by some Fellas that are taking on Basic Training which kicks off next weekend, and were using the opportunity to reacquaint themselves with driving on the sand after the summer break.
After building up the confidence levels with some side sloping practice, climbing higher and higher with each pass, we set off to put our cars and ourselves through their paces, putting into practice everything we had learned throughout the day as we explored more of the desert as a convoy.
One car unfortunately succumbed to the afternoon heat and was taken to the exit point slightly earlier than planned as the rest of the convoy pushed on undeterred to some bigger dunes to get the adrenaline pumping and put their newly found off-roading skills to the test.
With the day drawing to an end, we gathered by one of Al Qudra’s lake’s for some respite from the sun and to debrief after a fun-filled and action packed day. Smiles all round and satisfaction from everyone’s accomplishments was the reward for taking onboard everything we had to share with the group today – a big welcome to the community and thanks to everyone for making this Discovery a success!
Special thanks to Marko, Chef Marc, Sven & Martin for supporting throughout the day.
