Dirt Empire
National Day long weekend has now become a camping tradition with Desert Fellas and in this 3rd annual instalment, Dirt Empire camp was the absolute best.
With our spouses and young kids as passengers we planned an ambitious crossing of the beautiful and magnificent Liwa. With the biggest dunes and powery soft sands this is probably the most challenging but also the most majestic landscapes in the whole country. But with well trained drivers and meticulous planning our convoy made light work traversing through many salt pans and over enormous dune formations.
Making an early morning start, stopping along the way for breakfast and later lunch near the obelisk in the middle of the desert, we made very good time to reach our camp site mid afternoon ontop a dune which gave us a view all the way across into Saudi Arabia. Once camp was set, it was time to take in the view from our sand terrace balcony, enjoying good food and company while the young ones roasted marshmallow under the star filled sky.
The next morning waking up to a sunrise over endless sand peaks filled with pockets of clouds resting inbetween left us all in awe and a feeling that until you experience Liwa like this, you have not truly experienced the UAE which was very fitting on National Day.
The rest of the trip was more of the same endless beauty all the way to the exit and after covering 155km, it was as if we were saying goodbye to an old friend while inflating our tires. Thank you Hussam, Johann, Victor and families for an adventure that will live on in our hearts for many years to come. We will miss you Liwa till we meet again.
