Reel’in in the Years

It was a beautiful afternoon to head to Sweihan. Our group was small today (5), but we all arrived on time and were ready to go 10 minutes after the meeting time.

Once deflated and ready we had our safety briefing, set the convoy order, lined ourselves up, performed our radio checks, and we we moving.

This area of Sweihan is popular, so from the start we tried to avoid the many other groups enjoying our playground. We warmed up a bit with some shallow side slopes, straight crests, and some descents, but quickly got into higher climbs and some easy switches.

The drivers all did very well and everyone handled the steep terrain with ease. We took a few breaks, altered our route a bit, and watched all the silliness at Negra dune. Some impressive machines, but a traffic nightmare. We also encountered many camel heard and a few horsemen.

The ride went well and we experienced few second tries, a couple of sucks, and had time to discuss recovery techniques and do a little cresting instruction. Additionally, we discussed the importance of short clear communication between lead, second lead, and sweeper.

Thanks to my support for the day Lendyl (Second Lead), Anthony (Sweeper), and Marko (adult supervision)

  1. Thanks for an excellent afternoon Mike, thanks for the good company guys in an amazing location, my first time here, needing to go back on a picture taking mission.

  2. Was an awesome day out in Sweihan, one of my favourite areas to drive.
We had a small convoy supervised by Marko & a whole lot of fun!
The weather was beautiful and we stopped at Nagra to witness the mayhem toward the end of the drive.
I look forward to more drives in this area.

  3. This was my second trip as an offroader. Really enjoyed it. Good to go back to Sweihan.

This trip was within my capabilities, but also pushed my boundaries. We did a lot of cresting. I was able to stay on many of the crests, but there were a few that I fell off of them. There was two crests I didn’t feel comfortable doing. One of them, I took an alternate route.

Mike did a great job with the flow. It seemed like he was in his groove on this trip. There were only two instances where I wish a different line was chosen. Aside from that, great job leading.

Towards the end, I had a chance to do multiple attempts on one crest by myself. After about the fifth try I gained a bit of confidence.

Looking forward to the next drive.
