Motor Graders in Badayer
Eight of the ten drivers were on time today, for the two late comers we remind you the the time announced for the trip is the time we must start driving, not the the time to arrive at meeting point. Please do not let that happen again!
We started the drive in Al Madam area with a few high slopes to warm up, after some second tries we eventually manage to do the switch after a very high crest.
Many clubs driving in the area and multiple tracks on the sand made following the convoy very challenging.
Some technical dunes on the way to higher slopes were not tackled properly many times for different reasons. Lack of power, lack of momentum, improper approach angles…
After stopping a few times and making mini briefings we still had lots of issues with communication trough the convoy. Some members were told to stop and did not stop, other members were told not fight gravity and the kept fighting!
Many second tries were performed without being informed on the radio!
Fellas, good communication trough the trip is key for a safe outcome!!!
I really hope that all of us reflect on the mistakes made today and not let them happen again.
Convoy order: Tiago as Trip leader, Karen as second lead, Sid, Pradeep, Gianluca as Anchor, Rathica, Preggy, Chris and Salah as Sweepper.
Marko followed the convoy on the sides.
KAREN: I know itβs been a challenge to drive in the crests and still communicate and monitor the convoy, remember that if we are giving you this challenge is because we believe in you capacity. As you get exposed to situation like today is where you learn and improve!
SID: God job following the convoy. A few stucks and second tries could be avoided by better use of momentum and not fighting gravity. Remember to turn down wile you still have some momentum left…
PRADEEP: today you made many mistake brother(nothing personal) some of them were junior level like trying to take on big slopes without getting momentum and sticking on the same place three times.
Remember: PEDAL TO THE METAL, you must push your car to the limit, otherwise you wonβt be able to beat the big dunes.
Also you have to improve your radio communication! Inform clearly if you are doing s second try or get stuck, also when someone from the team gives you a direct instruction remember to read back by saying βrogerβ, βcopyβ or βOKβ!
GIANLUCA: Im sorry that you had the issue with your cooling system, it was a very hot day for the Red Devil today.
Good job on following the convoy today, I just expected a bit more communication, I did not hear your voice on the radio.
RATHICA: A few second tries today, some of them you did not reversed enough to getter the required momentum. Remember to reverse until you reach a flat area or until the rear of your JEEP points up. If you try again with the front still pointing up your tires will spin and you wonβt move!
PREGGY: You drove quite well today. But the one mistake you did could have ended bad! When Gianluca had skid of the slope and had to do a second try you almost ended up over his car. And we talked about that on the initial briefing!
CHRIS: Great job today my friend, only one second try and I can feel you much more confident as you get used to the new drive!
SALAH: Shukran for sweeping today Habib. Nice coordination for the self recoveries!
MARKO: Thanks for the supports and inputs along the drive today, I learned a lot!

It was a different learning curve for all of us in different aspects of dune cresting and switching today. Things didn’t flow according to the rule book but there is window for learning from our mistakes and mentoring for each of us on an individual level. There was miscommunication on the airwaves but apart from that it wasn’t that bad. Anyhow i think it was a tad too hot and everyone losing focus.
Keep the spirits high fellas. You rock!!!
Thanks for te technical learning drive. π
Thanks Tiago for guidance & driving tips.πnoted yr points, will rectify the mistakes
Thanks Marko for support & guidance, π noted my driving errors, will correct mistakes .π
Thank u Salouh for drive tipsπThank you all Fellas drivers for te awesome trip & looking forward to next drive π
I realy enjoyed the drive and i feel sometimes more challenged by getting up at 4.15 then the dunes π i am still not 100% sure, when to drive in low or high. If i drive behind you, i loose momentum earlier than you, if i drive in low, it seems the engine gets hot very quickly.. so i need to figure that one out… Otherwise a real joy. always good driving with you. Chris
I’ve had the overheating issues with my Jeep 2012 so I feel you. I like driving in High gear 2 for the straight stretch and 1 for more power and climbs as it is a smoother drive. However if the climbs are high or steep with soft sand, Low Gear 3-4 is best and it gives you more control on the steep descends. The only issue is that you have to stop to change to low gear.
I suggest you check and solve what is overheating your engine before you burn the cylinder heads like I did π
If your engine is working well – the drives are amazing because the Jeep is very powerful ππΌ
Thanks Tiago and Marko for the opportunity. Yes definitely I was a little bit afraid about cresting in the big Dunes. But Iβll try to be more confident next time .
@Tiago you chose some beautiful dunes for this drive – big and challenging which matched the Offroader levelππΌ Loads of high climbs, nice bowls and sharp crests and switches.
Keeping the flow was a bit of a challenge as the dunes challenged us back π Every one of us could have improved our communication. It is as Marko said: announcing a “I’ve lost the track” or “second try” or a “I’m stuck” is about our safety and our team Fellas safety.
I loved being back in my Jeep except it was still playing up with the skid control light coming on and preventing me from accelerating on the way to the drive. It also kicked me out of the gear that I had selected resulting in some second tries during the drive. Guess the new engine needed to be warmed upππΌ
Despite the issues, it was great fun. My niece had a blast and has beautiful memories to take back. She loved the spirit and camaraderie of The Fellas. I had a wonderful learning experience – each drive, whether in the same area or not, is different.
