Basic 7
Basic 7 got off to a slightly delayed start on account of the lead experiencing battery problems.
Thanks to our forward thinking sweeper trainee, radio checks and safety briefings were completed while waiting for the lead. This meant that delays were minimized and the drive could get off to a swift start.
Once the driving started it was clear to see that this group had what it took to fly the Desert Fellas flag. En route to Big Red the convoy encountered a plethora of small bowls which they handled very skillfully. The momentum of the convoy was that of a group which had substantially more drives than that of our Basic 7 convoy, and it was maintained non-stop for about an hour.
At Big Red the convoy displayed great control while completing high climbs on all the slopes of this massive dune. Other convoys in the area simply waited and watched in wonder as this well ordered and disciplined convoy completed all the high climbs in quick succession and vanished as quickly as they’d appeared.
After making easy work of the big bowls to the north of Big Red, one the Fellas had to be escorted out of the desert on account of a guest who was not feeling well. Our sweeper trainee handled this task commendably. Shortly after rendezvousing with what was left of the Basic 7 convoy, our sweeper trainee was called into action to again. This time, to perform an advanced recovery using 2 vehicles to recover a Fella who was stuck in a precarious position.
All-in-all a very memorable and productive day in the desert. It was a pleasure to see how far this group had come in just 7 weeks. Thanks for the great support on today’s drive Johann, and amazing driving by our Basic trainees.
