Dunes of discovery

The unusual start time for today’s meant that the traffic in the desert was limited to only our convoy for most of the drive.

The drive started in an extremely technical area where the small convoy was truly a blessing. After about 30 minutes the small technical dunes gave way to bowls of all sizes and the convoy took full advantage of a quiet desert.

This was Zoubeir’s first visit to Iftar bowl and he made light work of it, making it look like he’d skimmed that crescent countless times before. The route to Super bowl presented some amazing climbing and switching opportunities. Since most of the switches up to this point were approached from the leeward slope, the convoy was quite comfortable with the technique for the switches that followed, and the drive flowed beautifully.

We were greeted to a rather chaotic assembly at super bowl and decided to keep our visit there as short as necessary in order to make it to our planned exit on schedule.

Just before exiting at Refadeh, we were approached by a police patrol who instructed us not to exit via Refadeh, but to use an alternate route instead. This added 20 minutes to our trip, but nobody seemed to mind the pleasant detour.

Thanks Javier and Zoubeir for joining me on this drive. I look forward to doing it again with a larger convoy.

  1. I was thrilled for my first climb of both the Iftar and Super bowls. I’m really looking forward to the next time we’ll go there again!
The numerous switches and bowls were very technical and constant momentum (not speeding) was paramount.
The whole area was new to me so I really enjoyed every minute of it.
Thanks Preggy for charting out an enjoyable and adrenaline packed drive. And Javier for taking me safely over some of the crossings during 2nd tries.
We should visit this area again!
