Our last trip of the year turned out to be one of the more eventful mornings in the desert but with some fantastic teamwork we still made the most of being out on the sand with great company.

Initially setting off from our meeting point in Badayer as 2 groups – a Junior convoy and a small Off-roader convoy. Both following a similar route and with warm ups completed, our first big dune was where our fortunes started to take a turn – setting the tone for the rest of the trip.

Chef Marc unfortunately suffered a mechanical issue which meant an early exit to avoid causing further damage. Luckily still close to a main road it was an easy limp back to firm ground.

Not to be deterred, we merged both convoys and continued as one, pushing on into the desert towards Gravity Bowl with some good momentum and flowing lines, only slowed by a technical area with tightly packed, small but steep sided dunes as we approached some higher climbs – amazing discipline and driving skills on show from the whole convoy.

Pushing up one of the bigger dunes in the area, we had our second mechanical issue of the day as one fella had a major engine problem and wasn’t able to continue under their own steam. With some careful planning and a bit of supercharged assistance, our sweeper towed the stricken car more than 2.5km over the dunes back to the starting point as the rest of the convoy followed on.

As the tow truck was on it’s way, and taking the unplanned opportunity to enjoy a hot karak we set out again on our mission to reach Iftar Bowl before we ran out of time. It seems that the desert had different plans for us today as not too long into our high paced charge we had not one, but two pop-outs in close succession – the second of which requiring a full wheel change which meant we weren’t able to reach our target finishing point.

Cutting our losses, we made the most of the remaining time that was left and enjoyed the rolling dunes all the way back to Badayer where we had started out only a few hours earlier.

Huge shout out to Martin who was the star of the day dealing with everything the convoy and desert could throw at him today!

Wishing you all a fantastic start to 2024!

A drive that can only be described as character building. Thanks to Martin for all the uncompromising support, and Ryan and Chef Marc for the leads. Happy new year to all the Dallas.

Fellas! Not Dallas. Damn you autocorrect.

  3. It was an epic drive despite the unfortunate breakdowns. At Desert Fellas we leave no one behind and everyone exited the desert safe and sound. Every drive is a learning experience and great teamwork makes Desert Fellas stand out from the crowd. Here’s looking forward to 2024!
