Basic training 6

Offroad driving in the UAE deserts offer a plathora experiences, and that’s  even before the rubber hits the sand.

Today’s Basic training 6 trip started under a blanket of dense fog. The air was so heavily saturated that you could feel the cool precipitation on your skin. Poor visibility turned what would have been a medium paced warm up into a slow and labored warm up in a mild technical area.

Initially, the convoy struggled with safety distance and momentum, which resulted in a few second tries and self recoveries that were well guided by our sweeper Trainee. Then, as the morning progressed and the fog lifted, and so did the skill level of the drivers and the pace of the drive.

As we attempted the first challenge at Big Red, one of the Fellas started to experience problems with the traction aids on his vehicle, which made it impossible to complete any of the climbing challenges. After he was safely escorted out of  the desert, rest of the convoy continued to leave their mark on the front slopes of Big Red and then powered their way through the high climbs on the back slopes of this iconic landmark.

On our way to Pink Rock our trainees got to experience the bliss of driving in a trained convoy as we sped around bowls and made small crossings without effort.  Midway to Pink Rock, leadership of the convoy was handed to Zoubeir who led a very well paced segment of the drive with great flow.

Shortly after Zoubeir’s debut, the convoy gathered momentum and smashed all the dunes on their way to Chef’s bowl, where the drive came to a grinding halt when one of our Fellas experienced a technical problem which forced his car into limp mode. After many failed attempts at getting the car moving, it was eventually towed out of the bowl.

Thereafter, we took a slow meandering route to the exit; where our Basic training 6 participants were awarded their flags and welcomed to Desert Fellas as our newest Juniors.

Congratulations to our new Juniors. Fly your flags with pride and enjoy your hobby safely. We look forward to driving with you on future Fun Drives.

  1. Wonderful achievement in so little time by our trainees who are now fully fledged Juniors!
Looking forward to seeing you all on our FUN drives. This is where the real fun starts!

  2. Wonderful journey! Indeed the fog gave a very special and unique atmosphere to the warm up, never seen the desert like this before. But when the fog left the dunes, we felt immediately the pac picked up 🙂 and i had to deflate a bit more my tires (thanks Preggy and the team for the advice 😉 ) to climb the big red. And it was a very warm feeling to reserve the Desert fellas flag at the end of the session. Big shout out to the desert fellas trainer team, very professionnal and always in a good mood!
