Exploring large dunes is an exhilarating off-road challenge that requires both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Recently, we focused on key techniques and safety protocols for driving on large dunes, covering radio communications, descending techniques, bowl driving, and side sloping.

Effective communication was vital for safety and coordination. Drivers practiced using their radios to relay information about positions and hazards, improving situational awareness and response times. Descending large dunes required careful control, using low-range gears and engine braking to maintain stability and avoid skidding.

Navigating natural depressions in the dunes, or bowl driving, involved understanding sand behavior and maintaining momentum to avoid getting stuck. Safety was a top priority, with participants using the buddy system, performing pre-drive vehicle checks, and carrying essential safety gear. They practiced mock emergencies to ensure preparedness for unexpected situations.

Side sloping demanded precise control and a good understanding of weight distribution in the vehicle. Participants started with gentle slopes and progressed to steeper ones as their skills improved.

Mastering these techniques and adhering to safety protocols allowed for a thrilling and secure off-road experience on large dunes, significantly enhancing drivers’ abilities to tackle challenging dune terrains safely and confidently.
