Wadi Abadilah Hike
The weather in March is becoming increasingly hot – therefore we started the hike earlier – a strong group of 11 hikers met at 10:00 am. And a very special group indeed as we had 8 ladies on this hike.
Without a delay descended into the wadi. Yes – descended as Wadi Abadilah is somewhat special – like a sharp canyon carved in a plateau – and from the meeting point you actually have to take stairs down to the bottom of the wadi. We continued along the banana farms located at the bottom of the wadi, navigating their small irrigation channel, benefiting from shade and pleasant coolness. We reached the first “obstacle”: stairs up the wadi wall this time – and right after a descent over rocks to the bottom of the wadi again.
There we quickly gained distance over several “S” turns and navigated the second obstacle – kind of mini-ridge in the middle of the wadi. We reached the first ponds, climbed and traversed a small side wall and finally reached the second ponds. This spot was our turnaround point – as the hike was out-and-back topography. The second ponds is actually a sequence of fairly fantastic formations developed in ancient past by the running water in the bottom of the wadi.
It is possible to go beyond the second ponds into more open terrain – but an increasing heat made us stay in the wadi – where we could enjoy some shade of near-vertical walls protecting the sides.
We started the return journey – again moving quickly. While navigating the mini ridge, one of us overstretched the leg a bit – but fortunately this proved manageable – and we could continue although a bit slower. Radio comms makes things easier in such a case – a clear tribute to Desert Fellas equipment standards. In fact the group intuitively coordinated the return journey, providing mutual support and attention. We arrived back safely to the parking spot, in the allocated time.
The atmosphere was great – and in fact the injured foot seemed to recover a bit – so in positive spirits we waved good bye to the very special Wadi Abadilah
