Ab Initio 13th Generation

Back to early starts for Ab Initio but it was still a scorcher. Most of the Fellas were on time but we did have a later start to get everyone sorted. We began with the introductions, disciplines and safety equipment presentation from the DF leaders and support team, after which we split into 2 convoys, Red and blue convoy.

Blue convoy

Led by Marko,

Supported by Preggy and Gonzo.

This convoy comprised of drivers that had limited or no exposure to Desert driving. As a result, all discipline associated with Desert driving had to be taught afresh.
The convoy got off to a shaky start, and it was clear that straight Cresting was the Achilles heel of this group. Marko soon found a sufficiently challenging set of dunes and set out to teach the techniques for approaching and descending straight crests, and dedicated the rest of the trip to this critical skill.
By the end of the drive there was a visible shift in the groups confidence and technique regarding their handling of medium sized dunes. Additionally, communication was sharper and and team spirit was lifted.
The group still has to improve on some key disciplines which is expected but that said, they are at the beginning of a journey that they have all exhibited a great deal of enthusiasm in undertaking. With that level of enthusiasm and positivity, I certainly look forward to witnessing the growth of this group.

Red Convoy

Led by Chefmarc,

Supported by Javier and Sujith.

This convoy was a mix of some experienced drives and a few with limited experience. Straight cresting was the name of the game and repetition was the exercise. Prospects were displaying some nice control with awesome track following ability, a few second tries and stuck situations were dealt with buy our sweeper. After a good hour practicing, convoy finally starting to flow very nicely and we pushed a little towards the exit for a small adrenaline dose to finish right on time. Some disciplines will need honing over the next few weeks but this group displayed excellent team spirt and enthusiasm.

Well done prospect we are really proud of what we saw today and look forward to you earning your DF flags to become official.

Thanks again to Marko and all the support team, especially Mick and Latif for being our photographer crew today.

See all on the sand next week

Really well organised and delivered, which made a huge difference to me in finding the confidence to attempt driving in challenging conditions. The desert doesn’t care how good you think your driving is, it’s going to test you! And ā€˜failing’ can be pretty expensive, not just in terms of pride.

Knowing that the trip isn’t about trying to outdo each other beyond the limits of the driver and vehicle is so important. It was said during the initial brief that there was no room for egos- and clearly this was a value that the leaders all share, patiently guiding me through several attempts to get up the dunes… I didn’t feel like I was a burden, which made it much easier to concentrate on getting the technique right and learn.

To the internet- I’d say anyone who has an appetite for off road driving, experienced or completely new, should get involved with the Fellas. I’m excited about being able to develop my skills in a safe and controlled environment and progress to more adventurous drives. These events are hard to get on and you can really see why.

    Thanks again Blue team!
